How to Apply DTF Transfers: Step-by-Step Guide

DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers are one of the easiest and most durable ways to customize t-shirts, hoodies, hats, and more. Whether you're a first-timer or just need a quick refresher, this guide walks you through everything you need to get a perfect press every time.

What Fabrics Work with DTF Transfers?

DTF transfers bond to virtually any fabric, including:

  • 100% Cotton
  • Polyester
  • Cotton/Poly Blends
  • Nylon and more

This versatility is one of the biggest advantages of DTF over traditional HTV vinyl — no need to adjust your whole workflow for different fabric types.

Heat Press Settings

Getting your settings right is the most important step. Here's what we recommend:

  • Cotton: 300°F
  • Polyester & Blends: 280°F
  • Press Time: 1st press — 10 seconds (no Teflon sheet); 2nd press — 5 seconds (with Teflon sheet)
  • Pressure: Medium-High
  • Peel: Cold peel after the 1st press

Always use a heat press — not a household iron — for best results.

Step-by-Step Application Instructions

  1. Set your heat press to the correct temperature for your fabric (see above).
  2. Pre-press your garment for 5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles. Smooth out any lint or debris from the surface.
  3. Position your DTF transfer centered on the garment, film side up. Press for 10 seconds without a Teflon sheet.
  4. Cold peel: Release the press and let the transfer cool completely before peeling the film back slowly at a low angle.
  5. Cover with a Teflon sheet and press again for 5 seconds at the same temperature and pressure.
  6. Remove the Teflon sheet — your garment is ready to wear!

Pro Tips for Best Results

  • Always pre-press to eliminate moisture — steam is the enemy of a clean transfer.
  • Let the transfer cool fully before peeling. Rushing the cold peel is the #1 cause of incomplete adhesion.
  • For washability, the second press with the Teflon sheet is not optional — it seals the adhesive.
  • Store unused transfers flat, away from heat and humidity.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Transfer not sticking? Increase pressure slightly or check that your platen temperature is accurate with a heat gun thermometer.

Design peeling after washing? Make sure you did the second 5-second press with the Teflon sheet, and always wash garments inside out in cold water.

Edges lifting? Your peel may have been too warm — wait longer before peeling next time.
